Are You Living in Alignment?

A lot of stress and discomfort comes from living out of alignment—when our values, words, actions, and time don’t match up. But when they do align—when how we live reflects what we truly care about—we tend to feel more grounded, fulfilled, and at peace.

The tricky part? Many of us have never actually lived in alignment. So it can be hard to even know what that feels like, let alone how to get there. But the good news is: alignment is learnable. And it starts with paying close attention.

Here’s how to begin (and write your answers down, don’t just think them!):

When the various aspects of your life line up, you experience greater peace and fulfillment—two markers on the road to happiness. And it starts with honest self-examination and exploration.

1. Get Clear on What You Truly Value

Go deeper than surface-level answers like “love” or “peace.” For each value you name, ask yourself:

  • Why is this important to me (be detailed, draw on what your past has taught you)?

  • How do I feel when this value is honored—or ignored?

  • Where did this value come from in my life?

2. Map Out a Typical Day

Look closely at how you actually live.

  • From morning to night, what do you do?

  • What do you think and feel during those times?

  • Where do you put your energy and attention?

3. Reflect on Major Life Moments

Think about big events (graduations, moves, births, losses, job changes, etc.):

  • What drove your choices?

  • How did those experiences shape you?

  • What did you learn or feel in their aftermath?

4. Look for Patterns

Review what you’ve written. Are there themes? Can things be categorized? Any trends or recurring habits? What about any misalignments? What doesn’t line up? What things do you really not like? This reflection helps reveal what you actually value—not just what you think you value or what you feel you should value.

Honest understanding of your values gives you the information you need to create purposeful change in your life to help you’ve in alignment.

5. Use What You Learn

Once you see your values with some clarity, you can start making decisions that reflect them. You can start to see the areas of your life that could use some evolution and make shifts that help you move toward better alignment.
